Buenos Aires: Sights
Besides spontaneous exploration (perhaps the most rewarding way to spend your time in Buenos Aires), here are some popular attractions you won't want to miss:
- Plaza de Mayo. The political heart and soul of the country, where the Perons addressed adoring masses from the balcony of the Casa Rosada and where political movements still begin.
La Recoleta Cemetery. The centerpiece of Buenos Aires' most glamorous neighborhood is truly a necropolis, a city of the dead where many of Argentina's most powerful, including Evita, have been laid to rest in grandiose style.
- Teatro Colón. Completed in 1908, the world class opera house is also one of Buenos Aires' architectural gems.
- Café Tortoni. Rich with history, Cafe Tortoni makes a great place to catch a tango show, or just stop for coffee.
- Plaza de Congreso. The majestic congress building, capped by an 80-meter bronze dome, is a prime example of the Italian style of architecture that dominated the Buenos Aires in the late 19th century.
- San Telmo Antiques Market. Every Sunday, Plaza Dorrego gears up for its colorful flea market, resplendent with traditional Argentine music and dance.
