Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia, Argentina

Fitz Roy Massif

Why go: Enormous glaciers, stunning mountainscapes, and mysterious beech forests inhabit Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, Argentina's second biggest National Park. It's deservedly one of Argentina's most popular and iconic travel destinations.

When to go: Late spring to mid-fall (November to April), but watch out for crowds in January. Tourist facilities shut down entirely for the harsh winter months.

Where to stay: Most travelers stay in El Calafate, from which you can take day trips by boat or bus into the park. Further north, El Chaltén is emerging as an alternate tourist base, expensive and none-too-pretty but within walking distance of park trails.

What not to miss: The Perito Moreno Glacier, where you can watch tremendous chunks of ice crack and fall from its otherworldy blue face. The Fitz Roy massif, near El Chaltén, is one of South America's most distinctive mountain forms.
